Blue Lake Campground
Modoc Nat'l
Forest - Warner Mountain Ranger District
Blue Lake is
located at the south end of the Warner Range in
the Modoc Forest. The Warner Mountain Range is an especially
scenic area, a pre-historic volcanic region with ancient lava
flows and dense forests/vegetation. Blue Lake camp
is a typical situation in the mid-elevation South Warner
region.
This lake is very popular with
fishermen and it is not uncommon for the camp to fill up, and
can be down right tough to get a spot on holiday
weekends. There is a boat launch and day-use area
on the opposite shore from the campground.
The lake is
a dark green color and there is a good
backdrop of densely forested hills on the other
side. Or should I say, was densely forested. The
"Blue Fire" came through here a few years ago.
Thousands of acres of charred forest nearby. It's
quite sad to see the difference from my last trip.
But, it's the cycle of Western Forests. And
thankfully the area immediately around this camp was
spared.
Some
of the campsites were closed in previous years because of Bald
Eagle nesting, but this wasn't the case at my most
recent visit. Sites are
well shaded, but some of them are rather close together. Lakefront sites go
FAST, as you can
park your boats right at your site.
