Convict
Lake Campground
Inyo National Forest -
Mammoth Ranger District

Convict Lake Campground is located 10 miles southeast of
the Mammoth Lakes region, 2 miles off US Highway 395.
Convict Lake is set in a very picturesque cirque with
impressive Sierra peaks forming a beautiful reflection across
the clear water. Sunrise photography is probably exceptional...but
I have yet to be able to take advantage of that.
The campground
entrance is located across the
road from the lake's parking area and heads way back in the
narrow canyon along
Convict Creek. Sites along the creek are shaded
with aspens and a few pines, but most sites are out in the
open with high desert brush. Fortunately it stays
relatively cool up
here. Some sites have good views of the mountains that
form the backdrop behind the lake. Just a beautiful all
around Sierra location.
Overall the campground is only
average, but Convict Lake is very, very pretty. The
Convict Lake Resort is located just down the road with a
General Store, restaurant and cabins, etc. Come early on a weekend
to get a site, holiday weekends are crazy. Reviewed 06/2000.
