Minaret
Falls Campground
Inyo National Forest -
Mammoth Ranger District
The
Minaret Falls camp is located on the San Joaquin River in the Red's
Meadows/Devil's Postpile Recreation Area. The campground is
located 1/2 mile down a dirt road from Minaret Road and the Shuttle
Stop. The road is car passable with obvious care taken in the
ruts.
Most
of the sites of Minaret Falls look pretty much the same as the other
campgrounds in this canyon, but what sets it apart from the other camps
are the riverfront sites that have a view of Minaret Falls (Sites #
4-8). The San Joaquin River is pretty and the falls are
spectacular. These sites are among the best featured in all of the
Camping Guide Nevada.
The
other sites are pretty, and are spaced apart OK. Of course, the
riverfront sites are the most desirable and go the fastest. It's a
good walk up the road to the shuttle stop, but Devil's Postpile is less
than a mile away.
Showers
are available at the Red's Meadow Camp (approx. 2 miles south on Minaret
Road). You can take the shuttle there. Showers are free
(donations encouraged). Facilities are rustic, but the water is
heated by natural hot springs. Located just south of Red's Meadow
is Red's Meadow Resort featuring a Store, Diner, Cabins and Horseback
Riding. Reviewed JUL03.
NOTE:
Red's Meadow/Devil's Postpile Mandatory Shuttle. Visitors who are
not camping are required to take the Shuttle Bus from Mammoth Mountain
Ski Area. Visitors that are camping in the Minaret Falls camp
can proceed over Minaret Summit without taking the shuttle, but are
required to pay a $7/person access fee, maximum $20 per car. After
paying this fee, you are free to use the shuttles within the Red's
Meadow/Devil's Postpile Area. Shuttles run from 7AM - 7:30
PM. You can avoid the Mandatory Shuttle by crossing over Minaret
Summit before 7AM or after 7:30 PM. However, you will have to pay
your fee on the way out (should you leave between 7AM - 7:30 PM).
Day Visitors, Hikers and Backpackers are required to take the
shuttle. If you do not secure a camp site, you may be fined.
