Red's Meadow...the namesake of the campground

Scenic Ratings is 5 out of 5 = AMONG THE BEST

Red's Meadow Campground
Inyo National Forest - Mammoth Ranger District

Click to Locate Red's Meadow on an Area MapThe Red's Meadow camp is located near the end of Minaret Road in the Red's Meadows/Devil's Postpile Recreation Area, only 1/2 mile short of the Red's Meadow Resort.

This is a beautiful area.  Very densely forested, with literally hundreds of hikes nearby.  There is a trailhead across Minaret Road that connects to trails to take you to Rainbow Falls, Devil's Postpile as well as the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail.  Very spectacular.

The campground is laid out at the confluence of Sotcher and Reds Creeks.  Quite a few sites are on the creek.  Most sites are pretty close together, but not as close other camps in this area.  The sites in the North Loop offer the most privacy (Sites 39-54).  There are a few meadows spaced throughout the camp.

The most prominent feature here is not the scenery, but the bath house.  Along upper Reds Creek there is a bath house that is free to use for all campers in the Red's Creek/Devil's Postpile recreation area (donations encouraged).  The bath house is an old building divided into separated bath rooms (very rustic) that offer hot showers.  The water is not treated, but is certainly suitable for bathing.  It's piped directly from a hot springs up the hill.  What a great feature, and it is very rare to find showers at a forest service run campground.

Red's Meadow General Store is located 1/2 mile to the south.  It offers supplies and a diner, as well as cabins and horseback riding.  Reviewed 07/2003.

NOTE:  Red's Meadow/Devil's Postpile Mandatory Shuttle.  Visitors who are not camping are required to take the Shuttle Bus from Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.  Visitors that are camping in the Red's Meadow camp can proceed over Minaret Summit without taking the shuttle, but are required to pay a $7/person access fee, maximum $20 per car.  After paying this fee, you are free to use the shuttles within the Red's Meadow/Devil's Postpile Area.  Shuttles run from 7AM - 7:30 PM.  You can avoid the Mandatory Shuttle by crossing over Minaret Summit before 7AM or after 7:30 PM.  However, you will have to pay your fee on the way out (should you leave between 7AM - 7:30 PM).  Day Visitors, Hikers and Backpackers are required to take the shuttle.  If you do not secure a camp site, you may be fined.
