Hickison Petroglyph Campground
Bureau of Land
Management - Battle Mountain Field Office
Hickison
Petroglyph campground is located 20 miles east of Austin just
off US 50 at Hickison Summit inside the BLM's Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area.
Located within this Recreation area are the
Hickison Petroglyphs, an historical landmark.
The camp
sites are located along a dirt loop. Sites #1 - #8 and
#16 have moderate shade from pygmy conifers (piñons/junipers). Sites
# 9 - #15 have few to no trees, but most come with
awnings that cover the tables for shade. It's just a matter of opinion which is better, while the rear sites sound prettier with
the trees, the barren front sites have an
expansive view down the valley. There is a group of vault toilets in the center of the
camping loop and one near the petroglyph trail.
Located
just outside the campground is the Hickison Petroglyph
interpretive trail It's a nice 1/4 mile stroll through the
trees. There are brochures at the entrance that walk you
through the items of interest on the trail. The Native
American rock sketches are a quite interesting. Reviewed
