Cherry Creek Campground
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest - Ely Ranger District

We went South from Currant (nothing there so fill up at
Ely/Eureka) down the west side of range and then went over Cherry
Creek summit from the west to east. It is a slow dusty
winding drive and there aren't many places to pull off so we were
glad not to meet any one on the road. Pretty though.
Condition is OK
so long as you have reasonable clearance (we have ford explorer).
We went out the other way (through Adaven) and it is much easier,
so if speed is important that is the way to go.
It was a hot weekend so we stayed in the canyons/valleys - nice
hike up Little Cherry Creek from campsite. I had wanted to
do the Hooper canyon-Little Cherry Creek walk, which involves car
shuttle & dropping vehicle off at mouth of Hooper, but because
of the slow drive over summit it just wasn't practical.
Did go up to
base of the pinnacle above the campsite (you'll see it when you
visit) which is pretty interesting - pock marked red rock looks
like an artificial climbing wall and there are great views to the
east from there. Area is very scenic because the varying
geology (limestone and ignimbrite) gives rise to different shaped
hills and valleys. Flow of creek fine.
