Description:  The Horse Mountain campground is located on a flank of a high ridge in the Kings Range.  This is a desolate area and is probably the least visited campground in the Northern Coastal Area.  The campground is a nifty setup with an entrance road leading in with a few sites along it then a loop at the end with the rest of the sites all around.  Each is pretty private and densely forested with hardwoods containing a food storage cabinet, picnic table, barbecue grill, fire pit and garbage can.  Most sites look down into heavily forested ravines.  Camping here is quiet and relaxing.  We had the entire campground to ourselves, even on Labor Day weekend.  There is one set of bathrooms right in the center of the complex.  Reviewed 09/1998.

Description:  Mattole Beach, also known as Mouth of the Mattole, is located where the Mattole River empties into the Pacific Ocean.  The camp is semi-primitive and out in the open.  Trees do run up the hillsides in the coastal range but not down in the bottoms here.  The camp is just one road in with 7 campsites on each side.  Campsites are spartan but clean.  Not much privacy between spots due to the limited vegetation (with exception for the first 3 sites).  The sand dunes, the hillsides and the Pacific make this place quite pretty, though.  There is a row of portable toilets across from the entrance (which were extremely nasty upon review).  Lots of tide pools in this area.  A 3-mile hike begins from camp to the south to Punta Gorda Lighthouse.  Also many other hikes in the area, especially the Kings Range to the south.  Reviewed 09/1998.

Description:  Nadelos is located along a densely vegetated stream about 3 miles inland from the ocean near Shelter Cove in the Kings Range.  It's a long drive out in the boonies (so to speak) to get here, but it's not a desolate area.  There a couple of homes right across the street from the camp.  This is a tent only campground.  Cars are parked in a parking lot and you walk into the sites.  There are a couple of sites really close to the parking area, so it's not a long walk and you are near your car.  The farther sites though are better and worth the walk.  The campground is pretty private and clean.  There is one set of bathrooms at the entrance.  Reviewed 09/1998.
