The Kit Carson Campground is located in the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest on the north bank of the Carson River in Northern Alpine County. The entrance is directly off Highway 88/89, approximately 5 miles west of Woodfords, California.
The campground is fully paved and set back a little ways from the highway. With the sounds of the running river and shimmering aspen leaves, you can't really hear the highway at all. There are two small loops of camp sites, one along the river and the other heads up a hill.
Most sites are well spaced apart for good privacy. The forest is dense in this area with ponderosa and jeffrey pine, fir, cedars and a lot of quaking aspen. The foliage of the quakies here can be stunning in the fall.
The river side sites go first, but do not fret if there aren't any left when you arrive. The back sites are positively gorgeous. Some of the sites up the hill have giant boulders as a back drop, which are really cool. Facilities here are in good condition for their age, but hopefully the Forest Service will replace the bathrooms soon. They are starting to get dated and not very well ventilated. The biggest drawback here is that the campground isn't very large and the sites can fill up fast. Especially since the Forest Service has closed down the nearby Snowshoe Springs campground.
Directly across the highway is Sorensen's Resort which has limited supplies should you forget something. Otherwise it's a 30 minute drive to South Lake Tahoe, California or Minden/Gardnerville, Nevada.
Visited May 1999 and June 2008.
