Silver Creek Campground is located along Highway 4 in a steep canyon along Silver Creek. Highway 4 makes a steep and windy ascent just past this camp up to the top of the range at Ebbets Pass. The approach from the east from Markleeville is much less daring.
The campground is completely paved with one loop on the south side of Highway 4, and another loop on the north side. There is a vault toilet for each loop. Sites are set in a pretty dense forest of pines and firs. If you don't like the smell of burning brakes, get a site away from the road. The highway is steep near the campground, and it seems like brake smell is pervasive.
This is the finest campground setting in this part of Alpine County and is quite popular as a result. Firewood can be purchased from the Camp Host, except early and late in the season. Most sites are available by reservation.
The Pacific Crest Trail crosses throught this area near the campground. That would make this a good base to start an expedition on "The Trail."
