Big Springs Campground is located along the Owens River Road off of Highway 395 about 15 minutes north of the community of Mammoth Lakes, California
Big Springs is not well known, or well signed for that matter. Twice we have ended up here as overflow from the Mammoth Lakes area. Once on 4th of July Weekend, and another time during the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Festival.
Big Springs is nothing special really, not in comparison to the Mammoth camps. Access is completely paved. It's 2 miles east of US 395 off of Owens River Road (look for it on the north side, it's easy to miss). If Owens River Road turns to dirt on ya, then you know you have gone too far.
The campground is laid out into two unpaved loops. Most are well shaded under very mature jeffrey pines with an occasional ponderosa pine. Facilities were maintained OK. This is pretty primitive campground, sporting no water. Just basic sites with a picnic table and pit toilets. There are not even garbage cans, so you will need to pack out your waste. The Forest Service used to charge $5 per night, but recently did away with the fees. The Owens River is just a few feet away, with fair fishing. It's a good place to get away from the crowds. Services are 15 minutes away in Mammoth Lakes or June Lake. Reviewed July 2009 and July 2000.
