Alpine Meadows Campground is located approximately 10 minutes SE of Truckee, California off of State Highway 267 (Brockway Summit) in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Martis Creek Lake Recreation Area.
Many people (including myself) refer to this as the Martis Creek Lake Campground. However, at my last visit, I noticed it was indeed titled the Alpine Meadows Campground. Do not confuse this campground with the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort...that's 30 minutes away off Highway 89. But this campground is only 5 minutes from Northstar Ski Resort and it's golf courses.
The campground is set back from the Highway by approximately 2 miles, and set away from Martis Creek Lake by about a 1/4 mile. There are no sites that view the lake.
The camp is laid out in one simple asphalt paved loop with sites all around. They are fairly well spread apart with moderate shade. A few are quite well out in the open with limited shade, though. The east sites have a fairly nice view across the sage populated valley and forested hillside beyond the lake (the lake is obscured because of a low hill).
Sites are very clean and feature concrete curbs, picnic tables and very sturdy fire pits with flip-over barbecue grills. There is one grouping of vault toilets in the center of the campground. The campground host site is outside the campground on the Main Paved Access Road, but not terribly far camp. Firewood is sold by the host for a modest fee...or bring your own.
This is Recreation Country. There is lots to do. Fishing or kayaking at Martis Creek Lake, Glider Rides at the nearby Truckee Tahoe Airport, Mountain Biking at Northstar Ski Resort, the Tahoe Rim Trail is only 6 miles up the highway, and visit the shops and diners in Historic Downtown Truckee. Lake Tahoe is just 12 minutes away, too. Even though this is only a fairly pretty campground, there is so much to do around here...so who cares? Reviewed 08/2005.
