The Sand Mountain campground isn't your typical public campground. It's in the open sandy desert bottom at the base of Sand Mountain. The area is stark desert pretty next to the open salt flats. Sand Mountain is quite massive overhead gaining approximately 600 feet elevation.
The campsites are not defined units. The sites are primitive and wide open with fire rings. Most people come out with RV's, but tent camping is possible. There are a couple of groupings of toilets otherwise there are no facilities.
This area is mostly used by vehicular recreationists. Dune buggies and motocross bikes are everywhere. Most weekends are really busy and on these days the air hangs heavy with the smell of exhaust. This is not the place of quiet desert solitude, so it is best suited for those seeking lots of people and a place to run their machines.
Starting in September 2002, the BLM is charging $20 to stay/and or use the Sand Mountain Recreation Area. $20 is good for 7 days, not nightly. Or you may purchase an annual pass for $45.
Visited February 2000.
