Thomas Canyon is located in the center of the Lamoille Canyon Recreation Area about 30 miles southeast of Elko. This campground is in an especially scenic area (could be a national park) thickly forested in Quaking Aspen. Directly overhead looms 2000 foot glacier carved cliffs with sporadic limber pines clinging on for dear life. Waterfalls can be seen early in the season plunging from the cliffs, reminiscent of Yosemite.
This camp is very well known and is full practically every weekend in season. Get there early or make reservations. Even though you are sure to have company, most sites are very private with dense trees, bushes and flowers separating them. There are many creeks flowing through the camp, the main ones, Lamoille Creek and Thomas Creek flow year round. You can hike right out of camp on the Thomas Canyon trail, departing from Site #30. Also many other hiking trails head out of the canyon. All very beautiful hikes. Some very popular, some very secluded.
There are bathrooms scattered around the three loops. They are kept very clean. The on-site camp hosts and maintenance crews were awesome at review time (this can vary season to season, though). Reviewed 08/1999.
