Horsethief Gulch Campground
Nevada Division of State Parks - Spring Valley State Park
Longitude -114.21090, Latitude 38.02615

Click to Locate Horsethief Gulch Campground on an Area Map Horsethief Gulch is located right inside the entrance to Spring Valley State Park directly across from the Eagle Valley Reservoir. Access is via Nevada State Highway 322, a fully paved road from Pioche, Nevada. The road winds and meanders over high desert terrain and through scenic canyons. A very nice drive.

This campground is laid out in two loops, laid out end on end in a long forested canyon. The camp road is gravel and in excellent condition and is passable to all autos. Some sites are close together, and other are spaced well apart. Sites in the center of the loops are fairly level and the outer ones back up to the canyon walls. Views are filtered by a dense stand of pinion pines and utah junipers. A few have good views down the canyon toward the lake.

Each site has a shade ramada, picnic table, tent pad and a fire pit with a flip over BBQ grill. There are is a facility building in each loop containing bathrooms with flush toilets and showers. The lower building contains a book sharing kiosk. The upper building is pretty new and quite nice. There is a stack of wood near the campground entrance that sells firewood for $4 per arm full.

Sites #4 and #34 are handicap accessible and have concrete pads and sidewalks to the bathrooms. There are only two pull through sites. Water spouts are located throughout the campground but only operate in Summer. A group site is available across the road at the reservoir. It can accommodate large groups. It doesn't have much shade but has wonderful views.

Directly across from the campground entrance is the Boat Ramp and Day Use Area for Eagle Valley Reservoir. There is a boat dock with spots for fishing for about 5 or 6 people. My 8 year old daughter caught a 15 inch rainbow trout on a Disney Princess fishing pole here. There is also a fish cleaning station and bathrooms in the Day Use Area. Farther up canyon is the Ranch Campground, which is worth checking out.

Eagle Valley Resort is a couple of miles south off Highway 322 where you can obtain limited supplies. More services and facilities are available in Pioche about 15 miles away. RV Dump Station is available near the camp entrance.

Visited March 2000 and October 2009.
