Way, way up there? That's what you'll wonder starting up the Mt. Rose Highway from Reno. The answer is yes. This campground is high...nearly 9,000 feet. A nice cool summer retreat. It rarely ever gets out of the 70's up here, even when it's 100°F down in Reno. The Highway up is nicely paved and wide enough for RV's, but it is pretty steep and windy...and busy, so you may want to use the turnouts provided if you're a slow moving RV. It is only about 15 minutes down to Lake Tahoe from here.
The campground is pretty, clean and green and in a small bowl behind Slide Mountain. Bet you thought that was Mount Rose towering overhead, huh? Nope, Mt. Rose is across the highway. Large pine trees cover the camp. Sites are paved and the inner ones are on a large meadow, the outer ones scatter up the rocky hillsides.
You can hike out of camp cross country to the top of Slide Mountain, or on a trail near the first site to Tahoe Meadows. From Tahoe Meadows you can link up to the Ophir Creek Trail (connects to Davis Creek Campground) or the Tahoe Rim Trail. Additionally there is hike to Mt. Rose summit (over 10,000 feet) across Highway 431 from the entrance.
This campground is relatively small so it can be really full on weekends due to it's proximity to Reno, reservations are recommended. Reviewed 07/1999, 08/2005.
