Bird Creek Campground was converted from a typical National Forest Service Campground with casual overnight facilities into a picnic area only around 2000. During a visit in 2001, signs were posted that camping was prohibited. Probably a casualty of shrinking funding for recreation among our National Forests.
I discovered recently while perusing the Ely Ranger District's website that Bird Creek has been converted into a Group Campground and Picnic Area. So camping for groups of 10 to 100 people are now permitted. Advance reservations are required. Reservations can be made online for groups using the Reservations button in this listing. The Fee starts at $30 for small groups, up to $55 for large groups.
If you are not a part of pre-booked group, then camping is prohibited at Bird Creek for you. You will need to visit other Duck Creek Area camps like, East Creek, Timber Creek or Berry Creek to stay overnight.
Bird Creek has a good flow and runs year round above the campground, but like all the perennial creeks in this area, water is diverted out of the stream bed into an aqueduct below the campground. There is hiking at the end of the road up into the mighty Schell Creek Range.
Visited June 2001.
