Elk Flat Campground is located in Cave Lake State Park approximately 20 minutes southeast of Ely, Nevada in the beautiful and majestic Schell Creek Range. Mountains reach over 11,000 feet high nearby.
Access is via US 93/50, then a turn east on Nevada State Highway 486 up in to the Steptoe Creek Canyon toward Cave Lake State Park and the Success Loop. Approximately 6 miles from the highway is Elk Flat, just a little ways past the park entrance.
The campground is laid out in one loop with a good gravel road. The sites are spaced apart well. Some sites have great views down the valley. The campground is in a pygmy conifer forest of pinion pine and junipers. These trees reach only between 15 to 25 feet tall and only offer fair shade. The same trees exist at the Lakeview campground, although they are slightly taller up there.
Camp sites are clean and in great condition, as one would expect in a state park with the ranger's residence so close by. Each site is framed in with gravel and has a picnic table, a tent pad and a fire pit with a flip over BBQ grill. There are water spigots throughout the campground, but water is available in the Summer only. A set of bathrooms are near the center of camp with flush toilets and showers. Additionally there is a group site and one handicap accessible site.
Cave Lake is only a mile up the road, where there is a boat ramp, a dam and a beach. Cave Lake is a great fishing spot. Check out the Nevada Division of Wildlife's website for fishing and stocking reports. A hiking trail heads up the canyon to Cave Lake from across the road. There is a drive up and over Success Summit beyond Cave Lake. It reaches over 9,000 feet.
An RV Dump Station is located at the campground entrance at the highway. Visited September 1998 and October 2009.
